A Linux-based operating system from Samsung and Intel that was meant to be a mobile platform but ended up in TVs and watches instead.
Tizen took shape in 2011–2012 within the Linux Foundation as the successor to the stalled MeeGo, with Samsung and Intel as its heaviest backers; Samsung also folded its own bada platform into the project. The idea was an open mobile platform to challenge Android and iOS. A handful of Samsung Z phones reached the market, mostly in India, but the breakthrough never came.
Instead Tizen became Samsung's system for everything else: smart TVs (where it still runs), fridges, and for a while the Galaxy watches — until Samsung moved the watches back to Google's Wear OS under the One UI skin in 2021. An operating system that survived by abandoning its original goal.
