Samsung's in-house system-on-chip — the engine in half the Galaxy world, while the other half got Qualcomm's Snapdragon.

Samsung named its SoC family Exynos in 2011, debuting the Exynos 4210 in the Galaxy S II. The chips build on the ARM architecture and are made in Samsung's own foundries. For a while Samsung designed its own CPU cores (the Mongoose/M series) but disbanded that team in 2019 and went back to ARM's stock cores, typically in a big.LITTLE arrangement.

Graphics long came from ARM's Mali, but the Exynos 2200 (2022) switched to an AMD-based GPU called Xclipse. Exynos has carried a reputation for running hotter and slower than Qualcomm's Snapdragon, which is why Galaxy phones often ship with different chips depending on region — to the quiet irritation of whoever landed on the wrong side of the border.
