Unreal (demo)

Future Crew's 1992 PC demo that won Assembly and showed a DOS box with a VGA card could play in the same league as the Amiga.

Released at Assembly 1992, Unreal took first place in the PC competition. It strung together what counted as advanced on a PC at the time — vector graphics, rotations, smooth scrolling and effects synced to a Purple Motion soundtrack. The point was that it all ran fluidly on an ordinary 386 with VGA. The PC had long been dismissed as an office machine with none of the hardware help the Amiga got for free from its copper and blitter.

A year later came the follow-up, Second Reality, which is today the better known of the two. Unreal is still where it started: the moment the PC scene stopped apologising for its hardware.
