SUSE Linux Enterprise Server — the German distribution's paid, long-term-supported server edition.

SLES is the commercial, supported server version from SUSE, one of the world's oldest Linux companies (founded in Germany in 1992). The first edition appeared in the early 2000s, including a build for IBM's mainframes, and targets businesses that want certified, long-lived installations rather than the newest software.

Configuration is done with YaST and packages are handled with zypper. SLES competes mainly with Red Hat's RHEL for the same market: stable bases with support for ten years or more, certified for SAP, VMware and similar heavy workloads. The free sibling distribution is openSUSE Leap.
