SUSE's community distribution, as recognisable for the green chameleon Geeko as for its two faces: the stable Leap and the rolling Tumbleweed.

The project opened up in 2005 when Novell — which had bought Germany's SUSE in 2003 — moved development into the open. It ships in two flavours: Leap, a point release sharing its base with the enterprise product SUSE Linux Enterprise, and Tumbleweed, a rolling release always on the latest package versions. Packages are handled by Zypper on top of RPM, and installation and system settings go through SUSE's own tool, YaST.

Historically KDE was the default desktop while the Red Hat camp leaned toward GNOME — a dividing line that has shaped the two distribution families for decades. Geeko, the green chameleon mascot, has been around since the early SUSE days.
