The analog company that happened to buy the French startup whose radio technology became LoRa.

Semtech was founded in 1960 in California and long made analog chips for protection and signal integrity. In 2012 it bought the French startup Cycleo, whose modulation scheme became LoRa — a way to send small amounts of data several kilometres on very little power.

LoRa sits beneath the network protocol LoRaWAN and became the backbone of much of low-power IoT: meters, sensors and asset tracking. In 2023 Semtech bought the module maker Sierra Wireless, moving up the IoT stack.
