Backup company that worked out the best sales pitch for backups wasn't disk failure but ransomware.
Founded in Palo Alto in 2014, Rubrik started by selling a turnkey appliance that replaced the classic stack of backup software, media servers and tape library. Snapshots, policies and restores were driven from a web UI — the same simplification Nutanix had applied to servers.
The decisive move was storing backups immutably, so an attacker with admin rights can't delete them before kicking off the encryption. As ransomware became routine, Rubrik rebranded itself from backup vendor to security company. It listed on the NYSE in April 2024.
