Backup software

The backup software that rode the virtualization wave by copying whole virtual machines instead of files.

Ratmir Timashev and Andrei Baronov founded the company in 2006. Backup & Replication took a different route from the classic agent inside every server: it talked straight to VMware vSphere and, later, Hyper-V, copying the whole virtual machine. When data centres virtualized around 2010, Veeam was in exactly the right place.

The name is a play on "VM." Restoring fast — and being able to test a restore without touching the original — became the selling point against the heavy suites from Veritas and others. Insight Partners bought the company in 2020 for about five billion dollars.
