The Nutanix co-founder's second act: doing for backups what Nutanix did for servers — and eventually swallowing Veritas's backup business.
Mohit Aron had worked on the Google File System and co-founded Nutanix before starting Cohesity in 2013. The idea was to consolidate all secondary data — backups, archives, test copies, file shares — into one distributed storage system instead of half a dozen separate products.
Through the 2020s Cohesity and Rubrik became each other's closest rivals, with near-identical ransomware pitches. Cohesity's big move came in 2024, when it merged with Veritas's data protection business. That put one of the oldest backup vendors, with customers running NetBackup since the '90s, under the control of an upstart.
