A rendering engine on purpose — not a full game engine, just the graphics part done properly.

OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) was started by Steve Streeting around 2000, reaching version 1.0 in 2005. The point is what it deliberately leaves out: no built-in physics, audio or input. It renders 3D scenes through a scene graph and abstracts Direct3D and OpenGL — you bolt the rest on yourself, often Bullet and OpenAL.

The C++ library was long a first choice for hobbyists and some commercial titles, such as Torchlight. MIT-licensed since 2009.
