A lightweight C++ 3D engine from the early 2000s — the trim cousin of OGRE.

Nikolaus Gebhardt released Irrlicht in 2003: open source, few dependencies, and its own software renderer alongside Direct3D and OpenGL back-ends. The name is German for "will-o'-the-wisp". Through the 2000s it was a popular, lighter alternative to OGRE.

Development largely stalled after Irrlicht 1.8, but the code lives on in forks — among them the one that drives the mining game Minetest (now Luanti).
