An open-source successor to Microsoft's discontinued XNA framework — it keeps C# game development alive, notably behind Stardew Valley.

When Microsoft shut down XNA, the community rebuilt the API from scratch as open source. The project started around 2009 as XNA Touch and took the name MonoGame around 2011. It is a framework rather than an engine — no editor, no scene graph, just C# libraries for graphics, audio and input, close to the metal.

Cross-platform via .NET. Stardew Valley's ports rest on it, as do many indie titles. The sibling project FNA shares the same origin. MIT license.
