A 2D-focused game engine with a low barrier to entry — from Mark Overmars' hobby project in 1999 to the platform behind Undertale.

Dutch academic Mark Overmars originally wrote it as a teaching tool in 1999. Drag-and-drop logic for beginners, and its own scripting language, GameMaker Language (GML), for anyone who wants to go further. YoYo Games took over in 2007; Opera bought the company in 2021.

Despite — or because of — its simplicity, it sits behind a string of acclaimed titles: Undertale, Hyper Light Drifter, Katana Zero, Nuclear Throne. It can do 3D but is fundamentally a 2D engine.
