The world's largest IT wholesaler — the company between vendor and reseller that most people have never heard of.
It started in 1979 as Micro D in California and merged with the Ingram family's distribution business, trading as Ingram Micro from 1989. The business is simple and the margins thin: buy servers, network gear and licences from Cisco, HPE or Microsoft by the truckload and sell them on to tens of thousands of resellers such as Atea. Cloud subscriptions now flow through the same channel via its own marketplace.
Ownership has wandered: China's HNA Group bought it in 2016, Platinum Equity took over in 2021 and floated it again in 2024. In July 2025 ransomware knocked out its ordering systems for days, and the effects reached all the way to resellers' customers — a vivid receipt for how much passes through a single wholesaler.
