The half of the old Hewlett-Packard that got the servers, storage and networking — and then went shopping for supercomputers and switches.

When Hewlett-Packard split on 1 November 2015, HP Inc. kept PCs and printers while HPE took the enterprise side: ProLiant servers, storage, services and the recently acquired Aruba. The theory was that two focused companies would be worth more than one sprawling one. The services arm was soon spun off as well.

HPE has since bought its way into high-performance computing: SGI in 2016 and Cray in 2019, which handed it Frontier, the first supercomputer to officially pass exascale in 2022. In 2025 it closed the purchase of Juniper Networks for around $14 billion. Sales are increasingly steered towards GreenLake, where the hardware sits on the customer's premises but is billed like a cloud service.
