Remote-management controller (BMC)

HP's embedded remote-management controller in ProLiant servers — its own CPU and network port that stay alive even when the server is "off".

Integrated Lights-Out, iLO, is the BMC (baseboard management controller) HP built into ProLiant servers from around 2002. "Lights-out" refers to the unstaffed server room: with its own processor, memory and network port, an admin can switch on the power, mount an ISO image and watch the console remotely even when the machine itself is down. Its predecessor, RILOE, came from Compaq.

iLO speaks IPMI and the newer Redfish API, among others, and demands a separate license for the more advanced features such as full remote console — an irritation it shares with Dell's equivalent, iDRAC.
