Brent Oxley registered the domain in October 2002 from a dorm room in Florida and grew HostGator into one of the big names in cheap shared hosting. In 2012 it was acquired by Endurance International Group for around $225 million — the same conglomerate that owns Bluehost and a long list of other brands, which is why "different" hosts often turn out to share both owners and data centers. The mascot is still an alligator.
