The Provo, Utah web host that sat at the top of WordPress's own list of recommended hosts for the better part of two decades.
Bluehost sold cheap shared hosting: one account on a server with hundreds of neighbours, cPanel as the dashboard and one click to install WordPress. The wordpress.org recommendation was worth more than any ad campaign, and a generous affiliate programme meant half the internet's "best web host" lists somehow reached the same conclusion.
Endurance International Group bought the company around 2010, and since 2021 it has lived inside Newfold Digital alongside several former competitors. As is common in the business, many of the alternatives a comparison site lists share an owner. Anyone who wants more control moves to a VPS at somewhere like OVHcloud.
