Samsung's first mass-market foldable phone, from 2019 — and a cautionary tale about shipping review units that break.
Announced in February 2019 with a book-style Infinity Flex foldable OLED. The launch was delayed after review units failed within days — testers peeled off what they took to be an ordinary screen protector (it was not), and debris worked its way under the hinge. The phone returned in September 2019 with a reinforced hinge and clearer warnings.
Despite the rocky start, it founded Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line and helped revive the foldable form factor. Later models adopted Ultra Thin Glass and far sturdier hinges.
