Bethesda's engine behind Skyrim and Fallout 4 — as famous for its moddability as for its persistent jank.

The engine isn't new at heart; it grew out of Gamebryo, the lineage behind Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3. The rebrand arrived with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011, and the same code drove Fallout 4 (2015), Fallout 76 and — reworked as Creation Engine 2 — Starfield (2023).

Two things travel with it everywhere: the Creation Kit, the tool that turned Bethesda games into a modding paradise, and a physics-and-animation jank that became a signature in its own right. The debate over when Bethesda will truly switch engines is about as old as the engine itself.
