Rockstar's own engine, built when RenderWare vanished — and the backbone of every GTA and Red Dead since.

With RenderWare no longer available to license, Rockstar San Diego built RAGE in-house. It debuted on the unlikely Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis in 2006 — a tech demo dressed as a ping-pong game — then took over GTA IV (2008), Max Payne 3, GTA V (2013) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018).

RAGE is known for vast streaming open worlds and folds in third-party tech: NaturalMotion's Euphoria for procedural ragdoll animation and a Bullet-derived physics layer. It has never been licensed out — RAGE is Rockstar's own secret.
