German automation firm that turned the PC into a PLC and invented the EtherCAT fieldbus.

Family-owned, founded in 1980 by Hans Beckhoff in Verl. Its central idea — "PC-based control" — was heresy for years: instead of dedicated PLC hardware, an ordinary industrial PC runs the control logic in the TwinCAT software, which turns Windows into a real-time controller.

In 2003 Beckhoff introduced EtherCAT, an industrial Ethernet that hits microsecond precision by letting nodes read and write to the frame as it passes through them. EtherCAT became an open standard and now runs everything from semiconductor fabs to theatre stages. Its modular I/O, the Bus Terminals, are just as recognisable.
