Card acquirer born in 1997 British web retail, and one of the most frequently resold companies in payments.
Nick Ogden started WorldPay in 1997 so that web shops could take card payments, back when that alone raised eyebrows. Royal Bank of Scotland bought it in 2002 and folded it into its own acquiring arm. After the financial crisis the EU made the bank sell, and in 2010 Worldpay went to private equity firms Advent and Bain.
It has changed hands at regular intervals since: a London listing in 2015, a takeover by America's Vantiv in 2018, by FIS in 2019 for just over $40 billion, a majority sold to GTCR in 2024, and a purchase by Global Payments announced in 2025. The plumbing underneath has mostly just changed logos.
