Adyen

Pieter van der Does and Arnout Schuijff had already sold their previous payments firm, Bibit, to Royal Bank of Scotland when they started again in 2006. The name reportedly means "start over" in Surinamese. The pitch was to spare big merchants the patchwork of gateways, acquirers and fraud engines they otherwise had to stitch together: Adyen owns the whole chain, from the terminal on the shop counter to the payout.

When eBay announced in 2018 that it would move its payments from PayPal – which it had owned until 2015 – to Adyen, it was a fairly clear signal of who was winning the large accounts. The listing on Euronext Amsterdam the same year saw the share price roughly double on day one.
