Waffle
Tom Dell's BBS package for DOS, unusual in speaking UUCP natively and hooking a hobby board straight into Usenet.
Most late-1980s BBS software was built around FidoNet or private networks, and Usenet meant owning a Unix box. Waffle sidestepped that by handling UUCP dial-ups, Unix-style email addresses and newsgroups itself, on an ordinary PC. A sysop with a modem and an arrangement with a nearby Unix host could offer real Internet mail to users well before commercial providers existed.
It was later ported to Unix and OS/2. It never grew as big as the FidoNet packages, but it was one of the routes by which Usenet leaked out of the universities and into basements and teenagers' bedrooms.
