Networking På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-05

Gateway software that translated between FidoNet and UUCP, letting mail and newsgroups cross between the BBS world and Usenet.

FidoNet and Usenet solved the same problem — store and forward over dial-up lines — with different packet formats, different addressing and different ideas of what a header was. UFGATE, written by Tim Pozar, ran on a machine with a foot in each network and rewrote messages in both directions: netmail became email, echomail became news articles, and back again.

The addresses were the visible part. A FidoNet node like 1:125/111 became f111.n125.z1.fidonet.org, and a user there was suddenly reachable from any Internet address. For many hobbyists it was the first time their BBS had a window onto the rest of the world.
