Encrypted email from Hanover that skipped PGP and can therefore encrypt more, but only when the other side uses Tuta too.

Arne Möhle and Matthias Pfau launched the service in 2014 as Tutanota, Latin for roughly "secure message", and shortened the name to Tuta in 2023. The clients are open source, and unlike Proton Mail it encrypts subject lines as well as contacts and calendars.

The price is that Tuta doesn't speak OpenPGP. Mail to outsiders goes either unencrypted or as a link to a password-protected message on Tuta's own site, and there is no IMAP at all. In 2024 the service moved to its TutaCrypt protocol, which pairs classical key agreement with ML-KEM to hold up against quantum computers that don't exist yet, the kind of foresight email has rarely been granted.
