The consumer VPN with Lithuanian roots that is better known for its YouTube sponsorships than for its protocols.

The service was launched in 2012 by a group of Lithuanian founders, registered in Panama to stay clear of data retention laws, and is run by Nord Security in Vilnius. The marketing has been so relentless that "today's video is sponsored by NordVPN" has become something close to a genre convention.

In 2019 it emerged that a server at a Finnish data centre had been compromised back in 2018, leaking a private TLS key. No user traffic was said to have been intercepted, but it showed the problem with renting servers you don't control. 2020 brought NordLynx, the company's WireGuard implementation with a double NAT that works around WireGuard's habit of keeping the user's IP in server memory. In 2022 Nord Security merged with rival Surfshark, which is still marketed as a competitor.
