DEC's 64-bit UNIX for Alpha, renamed twice while the company that owned it was bought out from under it.
It started as OSF/1 AXP in 1992, the Open Software Foundation's answer to Sun's and HP's own UNIX flavours. DEC renamed it Digital UNIX in 1995 and Tru64 UNIX in 1999 — a year after Compaq swallowed DEC. HP inherited the lot when it swallowed Compaq in 2002. Every rename marked a new owner, not a new system.
Its strengths were TruCluster, which let several nodes share one filesystem, and AdvFS, a journalling filesystem HP later open-sourced. Built solely for the Alpha processor, it shared Alpha's fate: once HP pivoted to Itanium, Tru64's days were numbered. Support ended in 2012.
