Chip company (AI accelerators)

The Toronto AI-chip company betting on RISC-V and open software rather than imitating Nvidia.

Founded in 2016 by Ljubisa Bajic, formerly of AMD. It got most of its attention when Jim Keller — the architect behind AMD's Zen and Apple's early A-series chips — joined in 2021 and became CEO in 2023. Its Grayskull, Wormhole and Blackhole accelerator cards are built from many small cores, and the newer generations embed RISC-V processors.

Where Nvidia locks customers in with CUDA, Tenstorrent has open-sourced its software stack and also licenses its core designs, including to Japanese partners. The strategy is to be cheaper and more open than the market leader — the same game Cerebras and Groq are playing with different cards.
