A French ETL vendor that took on the expensive data-integration giants with a free, open-source edition.

Founded in 2005 in France by Bertrand Diard and Fabrice Bonan. Its business model was unusual for the sector: Talend Open Studio was free and open source, with revenue coming from support subscriptions and enterprise features on top. A graphical tool let you assemble jobs that read from a source, transform the rows and write to a target — the same ETL work that otherwise demanded licences from Informatica or IBM.

The company went public in 2016, was taken private by Thoma Bravo in 2021, and was merged with Qlik in 2023. The modern cloud alternatives Fivetran and Airbyte grew up alongside it.
