The plumber behind thousands of data warehouses: software that moves, cleans and merges data between systems never meant to talk to each other.

Gaurav Dhillon and Diaz Nesamoney founded Informatica in California in 1993. Through the 1990s and 2000s its flagship, PowerCenter, became almost synonymous with enterprise ETL: graphical pipelines that pulled from mainframes, ERP systems and databases, scrubbed the data and loaded it into a data warehouse every night.

When the cloud arrived the market tilted towards ELT and cheaper tools such as Fivetran, and Informatica had to rebuild itself as a cloud platform for integration, data quality and master data. It was taken private in 2015, re-listed in 2021, and in 2025 accepted a roughly $8 billion offer from Salesforce.
