A Chinese supercomputer builder whose machines climbed the TOP500 until Washington pulled the brake.
Sugon, formally Dawning Information Industry (曙光, "dawn"), built several of the Chinese supercomputers that competed for the top of the TOP500 list through the 2010s. The company grew out of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and was tied early to the country's high-performance computing program.
In June 2019 Sugon became one of the first Chinese HPC firms placed on the US Entity List, accused of links to military supercomputer development. The sanction cut off access to American processors and accelerated the hunt for domestic alternatives.
