The shotgun wedding of Ardent and Stellar — two losers that together made one slightly larger loser.

Stardent was formed in 1989 when the rivals Ardent and Stellar, both exhausted from chasing the same small market, pooled what they had left. The product was the Stardent 3000, a graphics supercomputer running Unix, and the AVS software lived on. Japan's Kubota had put in capital and soon took over outright (Kubota Pacific), at which point the original team scattered. The company was effectively gone by 1991 — barely two years after it formed. Silicon Graphics took the whole market.
