The Lua engine formerly known as Corona SDK, which outlived its own company and carried on as open source.

Two ex-Adobe engineers, Walter Luh and Carlos Icaza, founded Ansca Mobile and shipped Corona SDK in 2009, right in the middle of the App Store gold rush. The promise: write iPhone games in Lua instead of Objective-C, with built-in 2D physics based on Box2D.

The company became Corona Labs and changed owners a couple of times. In 2019 the engine was open-sourced under the MIT licence, and when Corona Labs shut down in 2020 the community carried on under the name Solar2D. An unusually happy ending for a discontinued commercial tool.
