The Austin company that gathered the smart home's radio protocols — Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth and Matter — onto a single chip.

Silicon Laboratories was founded in 1996 in Austin, Texas. Its EFR32 "Wireless Gecko" family runs several IoT protocols on one chip: Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth LE, Z-Wave and Matter. The company bought the Z-Wave business from Sigma Designs in 2018, becoming one of the few to cover almost every smart-home standard at once.

In 2021 Silicon Labs sold its infrastructure and automotive unit to Skyworks for $2.75 billion and refocused on IoT. Alongside the radios it also makes clock and timing chips.
