IT services company

The Samsung group's in-house IT department spun out as a company – the one running the systems behind the phones, the shipyards and the insurers.

Set up in 1985 as Samsung Data Systems to handle computing for Samsung's sprawl of affiliates. The model resembles EDS inside General Motors back in the day: an internal IT supplier with one guaranteed giant customer, trying to sell the same services to everyone else.

The business spans cloud operations, security, enterprise systems and logistics, where its Cello platform steers the group's global freight. It listed on the Seoul exchange in 2014, but a large share of revenue still comes from its siblings – which makes it interesting to the founding family and rather less so to anyone else.
