Japanese semiconductor maker that started with resistors and now leads in silicon carbide.
Founded in 1958 in Kyoto by Kenichiro Sato as a tiny resistor company — the name ROHM is simply resistor plus ohm (Ω). From there it expanded into integrated circuits, LEDs and discrete semiconductors. Today ROHM is a leading maker of silicon-carbide (SiC) power devices, a material that makes the power electronics in electric cars and solar installations more efficient than plain silicon.
The resistors are still in the catalogue, a reminder of where it all began.
