QNAP
Synology's perennial rival in the NAS market — powerful and feature-stuffed, but notorious for the ransomware waves that hit its internet-exposed boxes.
Founded in 2004 in Taiwan as a subsidiary of IEI Integration; the name stands for "Quality Network Appliance Provider." Its boxes run the QTS operating system and tend to push more features and raw performance per dollar than the competition, with everything from virtualisation to surveillance cameras built in.
The downside of that popularity has been security: campaigns such as QLocker and Deadbolt encrypted thousands of QNAP units left open to the internet — a reminder that a NAS holding the family's only copy of everything is a tempting target. Its main opponent is Synology.
