Péter Ször

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-16

Hungarian virus researcher who wrote the field's standard textbook on how computer viruses work and how to catch them.

Ször wrote his first antivirus program, Pasteur, in Hungary in the early 1990s, then moved via Finland's Data Fellows (later F-Secure) to Symantec, where he spent many years analysing and detecting malicious code. He later led research at McAfee Labs.

His 2005 book "The Art of Computer Virus Research and Defense" became the reference work: boot-sector and macro viruses, polymorphic and metamorphic engines, emulation and heuristics. It was unusually concrete for its genre and served as a textbook for a generation of analysts — and, one assumes, for a few readers on the other side.
