Friðrik Skúlason

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-16

Icelandic programmer behind the F-Prot antivirus and co-author of the industry's first shared naming scheme for viruses.

Skúlason wrote F-Prot in 1989 and built FRISK Software International around it. It became one of the major virus scanners of the DOS era and lived on for years as an engine licensed to other vendors; the antivirus business was sold to Commtouch in 2012. Among his staff was Vesselin Bontchev.

In 1991 he, Bontchev and Alan Solomon drew up the CARO naming convention, an attempt to get vendors to call the same virus by the same name. It partly worked, which in that industry counts as a win. Outside security he is known for Íslendingabók, the genealogy database covering nearly every Icelander, built together with deCODE genetics.
