Chinese phone maker from the BBK orbit, sibling to Vivo, OnePlus and Realme.

Tony Chen founded Oppo in Dongguan in 2004 with money and people from the electronics group BBK. It started out making MP3 and DVD players, and its American arm, Oppo Digital, even earned the respect of home-theatre enthusiasts for its Blu-ray players. The first phone arrived in 2008.

The phones run Android with Oppo's own ColorOS skin, and its VOOC fast charging from 2014 was early in moving the heat out of the phone and into the charger. OnePlus was formally folded into Oppo in 2021. In Europe growth has been slowed by patent fights, notably with Nokia, which got its sales in Germany halted in 2022 until a settlement in 2024. The competition is Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung.
