Micromusic.net
An online community for 8-bit music that, from the late 1990s, took chip music out of the demoscene and into the clubs.
Micromusic started in Switzerland around 1998 and gathered musicians making tracks on the Game Boy, the C64 and other old machines. The site combined forums, a song archive and its own pixelated-avatar aesthetic, and its slogan, low tech for the masses, summed up the attitude.
The difference from the demoscene was the audience. Where SID music was mostly played for other sceners, the micromusic crowd put on live gigs and treated chiptune as a genre in its own right rather than an accessory to demos. That road led from tools like LSDj to festivals and record deals.
