The Malmö studio that went from real-time strategy in rural Sweden to Ubisoft's big open worlds on its own engine.

Martin Walfisz founded Massive in Ronneby in 1997, and the studio later moved to Malmö. The strategy games Ground Control (2000) and World in Conflict (2007) dropped base-building and threw the player straight into combat, which earned them a loyal following. Ownership passed through Vivendi and Activision before Ubisoft bought the studio in 2008.

Under Ubisoft, Massive built the Snowdrop engine, which powers Tom Clancy's The Division (2016), Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (2023) and Star Wars Outlaws (2024). Together with DICE in Stockholm, Massive is part of the reason Sweden has more AAA developers per capita than should reasonably be possible.
