Released
2009
Type
Hadoop distribution
Successor
HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric

The third Hadoop vendor — the one that rewrote the filesystem instead of packaging Apache's.

MapR Technologies was founded in California in 2009 by ex-Googler M. C. Srivas and John Schroeder. Where Cloudera and Hortonworks built on HDFS, MapR swapped it for its own filesystem written in C++: no NameNode as a single point of failure, proper snapshots, and mountable over NFS so ordinary Unix tools could read cluster data directly.

Engineers liked the technology; the business model fared worse. As customers moved to cloud object storage, the market for self-run Hadoop clusters shrank, and in May 2019 MapR warned it might shut down. HPE picked up the pieces that August and eventually rebranded the platform as Ezmeral Data Fabric.
