A free C++ voxel engine whose actual games are written as Lua mods — better known by its old name, Minetest.

Finnish developer Perttu Ahola, "celeron55", started it in 2010 as something that looked like a Minecraft clone and soon became something else: an engine with no built-in game. Blocks, tools, mobs and rules are all defined in Lua, and the server ships its mods to the client on connect. The same engine therefore runs survival games, puzzle games and classroom projects alike. Rendering sits on the project's own fork of Irrlicht.

In October 2024 the project renamed itself Luanti — Lua plus the Finnish luonti, "creation". The reason was that "Minetest" made everyone assume it was a clone, which was exactly the image the developers had spent fourteen years trying to shake.
