A modern, free 2D level editor from one of the designers behind Dead Cells — built as a friendlier successor to Tiled.

LDtk ("Level Designer Toolkit") was released in 2021 by Sébastien Bénard, known as Deepnight and a game designer on Dead Cells. The project file is plain JSON, which makes it trivial to load into any engine; official MIT-licensed loaders exist for Haxe, Unity, Godot and Unreal.

What sets it apart from older tools is auto-layers: you paint an integer grid and rules pick the right tile for you, a built-in form of autotiling. Entities carry their own typed fields, levels compose into a world, and everything updates live. For anyone assembling a tilemap from a tileset it is a markedly less brittle experience than its predecessors.
