Capacitor maker with roots in Union Carbide, best known for tantalum capacitors.

The name splices chemistry and metallurgy, and the business began in 1919 inside Union Carbide, making alloys for the electrodes of radio tubes. After the war KEMET specialised in capacitors — above all tantalum capacitors, compact and stable and long indispensable in military and space electronics. The range now includes ceramic and film types too.

In 2020 KEMET was bought by Taiwan's Yageo, placing two of the world's largest passive-component makers under one roof.
