A modern open 3D physics engine built for Horizon Forbidden West — multithreaded, deterministic and free since 2021.

Jorrit Rouwe wrote Jolt at Guerrilla Games for Horizon Forbidden West (2022) and open-sourced it under an MIT license as early as 2021. It was designed for modern many-core consoles: the solver is thread-safe and deterministic, which makes it well suited to networked games that rely on lockstep.

Godot 4 adopted Jolt as an alternative to its built-in engine, and others have picked it up since. A late but fast-rising entrant to a field long split between Havok, PhysX and Bullet.
