The AI company behind the Pi chatbot, which raised more than a billion dollars and then effectively moved in with Microsoft without formally being bought.

Inflection was founded in 2022 by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and researcher Karén Simonyan. Its chatbot Pi launched in 2023, pitched as a kind personal companion rather than a work tool, running on the company's own language models. Backers included Microsoft and Nvidia.

In March 2024 Microsoft hired Suleyman, Simonyan and most of the staff, paying around $650 million to license the models. The arrangement returned money to investors without a conventional acquisition review, and the UK competition regulator examined it as a merger anyway. Suleyman became head of Microsoft AI, in charge of Copilot. Inflection carries on as a smaller company focused on enterprise customers.
